“Have a Peaceful Place.”

Our company just launched a new seminar, and one of the topics is how to handle children when they have melt-downs. A good preventive strategy is to have a “peaceful place” in your classroom. Students can go there when they are upset before they have a meltdown, explode, or get into trouble. It can be as simple as a rocking chair or as elaborate as a “little niche” in the room with headphones to listen to calming music. You can also include calming photos on the walls, paper to color or journal, and some calming books for them to read. Involve the students in planning the “peaceful place.”

A little bit of prevention can go a long way in having a calm classroom.

Have a wonderful day.

I like what you have to say about the need for a calming place. My need is the spact to put one. Yes, so many can say what here or there. We all have different obstacles, and mine is space. I have tried to make the library area a calming place, and for the most part I do think it works.

Hi,
We have a very small area beside our library where we have a small child's canvas chair with Kermit the Frog. On the back of the library bookcase I made a poster that says Kermie the Listening Frog. He is mainly presented as the place/person/frog to go to and talk to instead of tattle telling but he can be there to just listen. (A couple of the students colored the poster too)
