For every door that closes, a new door opens. Often you are the one that gets to shut the door and open a new one for students.
Students with special needs often go undetected for years. They are often thought of as lazy, unmotivated, troublemakers, or uncaring. They need doors opened for them in which they are accepted by their peers. They need doors opened so they feel good about themselves and their accomplishments. They need doors opened that are filled with brightness instead of darkness. Look for those children who just don’t “fit,” and find ways to open new doors for them. You are a difference maker.
For some of you, today opens the door to a new year in the celebration of the holiday, Rosh Hashanah. To those of you celebrating this holiday, all of us at Appelbaum Training Institute wish you a happy and healthy new year.
Have a wonderful day.

my "special" need went undetected for a very long time. It slowed my ability to learn, and comprehend. I don't have true dislexia, but a form of it that now has a different name. I also needed glasses between 2nd and 3rd grade and didn't get them until 6th grade. Parents need to be pushed to do what is right for their children. There is too much hand holding going on, and not enough pushing. I had to have eye training therapy, which my dad did not want to pay for. It took 2 years before everthing started to come together. That means that between kindergarten and 8th grade i barely made it. I so tired of trying, so tired of studying and not getting it, so tired of being told i wasn't doing my best - living up to my potential. DUH! i couldn't make sense out of what i was reading in text books and in some of my own notes. By high school i jut wanted out. I was so tired of being put down by those who were probably thinking they were trying to bring me along. I can't tell you how much i hated school. I have dedicated myself to making sure parents advocate for their own children. I push them to get their children tested for diseases and get those eyes checked by the time the child is 4 I took care of a child whose parents just didn't get it, and now there 4 year old has had to have speech therapy for 2 years, and still has a hard time communicating. He wants to fit in so badly! Getting ear infections diagnosed and treated in a timely manner is so very important. I had pushed that family to the limits. I pushed them in to making a decision concerning his care. They finally took him to a specialist who told them that yes he indeed had suffered from too many ear infections, and has some hearing loss and that he lost speech development because of it all. Push Push and Push some more. Kids come first.
Thankfully, with the new law requiring RTI, Response to Intervention, to be implemented in schools, no child will fall behind the cracks again. I am very excited about this. I wrote a new book that will be out in the next week about this.
We do all need to be advocates for our children.
Have a great day and thanks for sharing your story and your commitment to children.
Best wishes,
Maryln
Dear Marilyn
It was good you mentioned about Rosh Hashana. It would have been excellent if you would have mentioned about Eid festival of muslims. That would have been an awesome example of respecting diversity.
Thank You.
Dear Anonymous,
If you would like to send me a calendar that includes your holidays, I will be glad to include something when it is appropriate. It would be neat if calendar manufacturers had all the different holidays for all faiths included.
Best wishes,
Maryln
